Image
in Crisis, a joint pilot project of the University of Nottingham
and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (see our project
team), aims to dissect the prevalent approaches to the study of images
in the Greek and Roman worlds and explore the development of the discipline
in the 20th and 21st century and the strengths and limitations of current
methodologies. The project arises from an interest in the explosion of
image-use in contemporary media and, with it, research into the differences
of meaning and reception according to factors of transmission, culture,
social class and gender. To achieve its aims the project will examine
developments in British and German scholarship where conflicting epistemological
paradigms exist for the pursuit of image studies.
